Golf bags are an important part of your equipment, you may not think so but how else would you carry your clubs, balls and all your other gear? Basically there are only two kinds and it comes down to whether you walk or ride when you play. Whichever you prefer to do there are certain distinct differences between a carry/stand Golf Bag and one that is designed to be hauled on cart. Your personal preference also plays a big part in choosing the right Golf Bag.

There are a few things to consider when you are purchasing a new one. They are; comfort, weight, durability and protection.

I like to ride when I play so mine rides on the back of the cart. I'm not carrying it so weight is not a concern for me. Cart bags are larger and therefore they are heavier. They have lots of pockets for storage so you can bring along anything you might need. All the pockets and zippers

Durability is an important factor when you play a lot. I play three times week so mine gets a lot of use. The zippers have to be durable enough to handle constant opening and closing.

Club Protection this is a factor that is sometimes over looked. Most cart bags are designed so that each club has its own individual slot. This is a very good feature because we don't want the expensive graphite shafts on our woods and hybrids to get damaged banging around with our irons. Also some have an external slot for your putter; this is good because some of today's putters have very large heads.

Anti-theft Protection, one manufacture has designed a system that locks your clubs in and then your bag can be locked to the stand or in the trunk of your car or back of your truck. This is a very handy invention indeed. Which manufacture you ask "Burton"

Another nice feature (but not necessarily a necessity) that some bags have is a pocket cooler to keep your favourite beverage cold.

Something else to think about is water resistance. This will cost you more, but having dry clubs and gear when the weather turns bad is a big bonus.

Players that prefer to walk and carry are looking for certain features in a Golf Bag as well. Also when you are just starting to take up this game a carry bag is the way to go. The reason is you probably won't have a full set of 14 clubs yet.

Weight is a very important factor to these folks. The average Golf Bag when loaded weighs between 25 and 45 pounds, with the carrying type being towards the 25 lb mark. So the lighter the better obviously.

Comfort is a big factor when carrying your Golf Bag. So the straps must be well padded for comfort and ergonomically designed to reduce the stress on your shoulders. Carrying puts a tremendous strain on your back and shoulders putting it down and picking it up close to 100 times per round.

The stand has to be very sturdy as well opening and closing quickly every time you set it down or pick it up. It should be designed so that when you're carrying it the stand isn't digging into your back.

These are a few of the things to consider, there are more such as color, logos, name plates etc. So whether you prefer to walk or ride when you play, there is a Golf Bag that's just right for you. When you are looking for a new bag use these guidelines to help you figure out what you need. I hope this helps you find your new Golf Bag.
